Zakat

What is Zakat?

In Arabic, zakat means purification, growth and blessing. It is a charitable practice that requires all able Muslims (those who meet the requirement of zakat as dependent upon nisab and hawl—see below) to contribute a fixed portion of their wealth “2.5% of savings” to help the needy.

“Surely they who believe and do good deeds and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate they shall have their reward from their Lord, and they shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve” Surah Al-Baqara 277

Zakat is the right of the poor in the wealth of the rich. Zakat is extraordinary worship promised with dozens of verses and hadiths that will not reduce your wealth, and even increase it many times over. Although it has become a custom to give in the month of Ramadan in our country, zakat is a very good example of social solidarity that can be done at any time of the year.

Zakat is also a spiritual connection to one’s maker – to purify your wealth for the will of Allah is to acknowledge that everything we own belongs to Him, and it is for Him that we strive to end poverty and help our brothers and sisters.

“Whoever pays the zakat on his wealth will have its evil removed from him” (Ibn Khuzaimah and at-Tabarani).

What is the Decree of Zakat for Muslims?

Our Prophet (PBUH) said that zakat would betaken from Muslim taxpayers and counted giving zakat among the conditions of Islam, confirming that it is worship as well as a financial obligation (Bukhari, “Faith”, 2; “Zakat”, 1). When The Messenger of Allah, Muâz b. sending Jebel to Yemen with financial, administrative, he instructs him: “First, invite them to know and to know that there is no god but Allah and that I am the prophet of Allah. If they accept, teach them that five daily prayers are obligatory for them every night and day. If they accept this as well, inform them that Allah has made it obligatory for them to receive zakat from their property and this zakat is taken from the rich and given to the poor.”(Bukhari,“ Zakat ”, 1).

“As-Sadaqat (Zakat) are only for the Fuqara' (poor), and Al-Masakin (the needy) and those employed to collect (Zakat funds); and for to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam); and to free the captives; and for those in debt; and for Allah's Cause (i.e. for Mujahidun - those fighting in the holy wars), and for the wayfarer (a traveller who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.” - Chapter at-Tawbah Tevbe, 60

Whom Is Zakat Given To?

It is stated in the Quran to whom zakat can be given in this regard, and these are listed as follows in Surat at-Tawba, which was sent down in the 9th year of the hejira: “Alms-tax is only for the poor and the needy, for those employed to administer it, for those whose hearts are attracted ˹to the faith˺, for ˹freeing˺ slaves, for those in debt, for Allah’s cause, and for ˹needy˺ travelers. ˹This is˺ an obligation from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.” (At-Tawba, 9/60.)
